Here is some information about the Pikes Peak Region…the 2009-2010 Thirteenth Southern Colorado Economic Forum, showing drop out rates, ACT scores, and enrollments in local colleges — see pages 26-27.

If you are looking for information on charter schools and public schools, you might try the Great Schools website.  They post the status of schools in relation to the CSAP testing, and also have parent reviews about the schools.   They can also help you find a school (elementary, middleschool, and high school) that fits your needs.  

Educating Children of Color Summit Jan 21-22, 2011 at UCCS.

The Fourth Judicial Best Practices Court is planning its Fourth Annual Educating Children of Color Summit. The event will be held at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in conjunction with the Culturally Responsive Teaching, Leadership and Counseling Symposium.  The event, Reaching Higher, will have specific programming for youth on Friday, January 21st and Saturday, January 22nd. Programming for parents, educators and child welfare professionals will be held on the 22nd  of January, 2011.

Carolena 239x300 K 12 Education Carolena Jackson, Volunteer Education Coordinator for the Colorado Springs Indian Center.  The CSIS is proud to introduce Carolena Jackson as our Volunteer Education Coordinator.  She will be making contacts with teachers, adminstrators, counselors, parents and students in the various schools in the Pikes Peak Region to let them know about the CSIC opportunities, gather needs and issues of the local Native American community, and forward information for parents and teachers for posting on the CSIC K-12 Education page.  (Carolena also hosts the Beading workshops at the CSIC).

If you are interested in having children experience more of the world of art and creativity, check out Future Self.  Here is a flyer for their current programs.  And if you are interested in field trips and resources for lesson plans and other topics about Art…please be sure to check out the Denver Art Museum pages for teachers!  You can also sign up to receive regular emails from the Denver Art Museum– which can help you keep in touch with events, exhibitions and learning opportunities!

The Colorado Historical Society has a webpage that might be helpful in teaching about Native people in our area.

History Colorado Now for Educators:   Resources for educators on Hispanic and Native American cultures in Colorado.

The Rock Ledge Ranch has wonderful hands on experiences of what life was like in Colorado Springs in the 1870s-early 1900s. 

Old Bent’s Fort provides another hands on adventure — a day trip out east. This is the reconstructed 1840s fur trading fort.  It is operated by the National Park Service.  

In the spring of 2011 there will be a series of Tipi Raising and Ute Heritage Workshops.  Please check the flyer and make plans to have your class attend!

Colorado Springs District 11 provides an Enrollment Guide to the various elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, charter schools, alternative schools and special programs. 

The Community Partnership for Child Development (Headstart) has excellent resources for parents, toddlers and pre-school children. 

Here are a couple of schools recommended by our local parents:

Scholars to Leaders Academy  (Colorado Springs District 11):      They offer longer school days, before and after school programs that start at 6:30 am and end at 5:30 pm.  This would be great for working parents.  Mona Contreras is the Dean of Students, please give her a call with any questions at (719) 575-9380. Patriot Learning Center (Falcon District 49):  Grades 6-12 . The school provides  hands-on projects and small class sizes, which enable teachers to better know each student, and to guide students to bring out the best of their abilities.  Parents are encouraged to be involved with student learning and activities.   11990 Swingline NE Road

Here is a resource for parents who wish to Home School. Here is an online magazine about home schooling. And here are some specific links to Home School resources provided by the Pikes Peak Library District. (You don’t have to be home schooling to explore these resources…many of them can help you become better equipped to help your students with home work assignments!)
