Scholarships for College
The Gen and Kelly Tanabe Scholarship is open to 9th-12th grade high school students, college students or graduate school students who are legal U.S. residents. Students not currently in school must plan to enroll in a higher education program within 12 months. Students may study any major and attend any college in the U.S. The award may be used for tuition, room and board, books or any related educational expense. A brief personal statement is required. Amount: $1000 Deadline: December 31, 2010
College Horizons provides a six day training for how to apply to college, how to understand finanacial aid opportunities for college, and how to apply for scholarships. They will have summer sessions in 2011. Please see the flyer and their website for more information. (There is a fee for this program; but they do have financial assistance available).

Harvard University Announcement
No tuition and no student loans
Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard’s president Lawrence H. Summers said, “When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution.”
If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free… no tuition and no student loans!

SOURCES OF FINANCIAL AID FOR NATIVE STUDENTS: New Mexico State University provides a publication of Scholarships available for Native American Students. The American Indian Program provides information and applications for numerous scholarships available to Native Americans and minority students at the beginning of the Fall Semester. Colorado Technical University: For individuals who want to attend college (must be out of HS for at least 5 years), Colorado Springs Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc is offering a scholarhip. Application is here. The application is due July 15, 2010.
Daniels Fund Scholars Program: Here is an opportunity to apply for a scholarship and to also participate in a career mentoring program. Your high school is one of the referral agencies for this scholarship, so be sure that you connect with the counselor there!
The Boettcher Foundation also has scholarships. Your high school counselor or a counselor at your college might be able to assist you with this application also.
The American Indian Education Foundation has scholarships available as well. Be sure to review the scholarships and website for the American Indian College Fund. They have recently received a grant for 14 scholarships for Native American women from The Women’s Self Worth Foundation. The grant will be used to fund seven scholarships at the amount of $4,000 per year for a period of two years for Native women pursuing an associate’s degree at a tribal college; four scholarships for $6,000 per year for four years for Native women students pursuing a bachelor’s degree at a tribal college; and three scholarships for $8,000 per year for four years for Native women pursuing a bachelor’s degree at a mainstream college or university. Preference will be given to Native women applicants who show academic achievement and involvement in their communities.

Office of Navajo Nation Scholarship and Financial Assistance “The office of Navajo Nation Scholarship and Financial Assistance Program’s purpose is to serve eligible Navajo people and provide them the opportunity to achieve their educational goals. This opportunity is provided as a privilege with the intent that recipients, upon graduation, will return to the Navajo Nation to apply their learning to benefit the continuing development of the Navajo Nation. ”
Be sure that you check the various opportunities on the website. There are funds for graduate students and funds to help Navajo doctoral candidates as well. Funding is for ONE year only. Deadline for 2010 applications is November 25, 2010. Be sure to review download the application! If you missed it, plan for next time!

Be sure that you investigate the educational benefits available through the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post 9-11 GI Bill.
Survivors and Dependents (DEA): Educational benefits are available for family members of deceased or totally disabled service members. (Be sure that you review the webpage and discuss your options with a VA representative; situations vary).
