LACROSS
The 2010 World Lacrosse Championship games are being held this month from July 15-24 in England. The game of Lacrosse was created by the League of Iroquois nations long ago in the US and the Iroquois National Lacrosse team is scheduled to play the opening game against England. The problem is the team is having trouble getting to England because they usually travel abroad on their Iroquois Nation passports, something the Iroquois have been doing for many decades. RUNNING
Native youth interested in running competitively, check out this article on the newly formed Sports Warrior Track Club (SWTC)out of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque. The man in charge is Mike Daney, Choctaw, who is the director. Daney raises money to pay travel expenses for elite athletes to compete at a national level by sponsoring an annual 5K National Championships and Open Community Run. SWTC runners have competed in Olympic qualifying trials and USA Track Field Championships. You can participate in the Open Community Run in the summer, but to qualify for the SWTC competitions, you must be in college or have already graduated. For more info, click here.
GOLF
The winner of the First Nations Golf Association’s 2010 Oneida Warrior Open Championship in Green Bay, WI, was Gene Webster, Jr., Navajo/Oneida/Ojibwa. He won by a six stroke victory over second place Demando Mango, Mississippi Band of Choctaw, and third place was a tie by Steve McDonald, Potawatomi, and Joe Ziders, Pechanga Tribe.
