CSIC Youth Sports Teams

Currently, the CSIC is trying to organize a youth basketball team to engage in in-house games as well as nationwide competition with other Native American youth teams across the country.  At this time, there aren’t enough players to form an ‘official’ team, but kids are encouraged to come join us to get some fantastic exercise.   The current program is focusing on personal fitness through exercise involving…basketballs!  Simple drills and exercises that prepare younger children for this sport, as well as more complex drills and play for the older kids, make this a great opportunity for all our community’s youth to come together in good health and fun.

The basketball/fitness team is led/coached by Andrew Barilla, and meets one Saturday per month at the Trinity United Methodist Church gym – adjacent to the dining room – during the CSIC Youth Groups.  Please see the community-wide calendar for dates and times.

We hope to see you there, and to get a fantastic, dedicated team working together and training hard soon!

Some areas of interest:

If you are interested in the current happenings for traditional Native Sports (such as LaCrosse) or running  (competitive track) or more contemporary sports such as golf, you might wish to investigate these stories:

Sports Warrior Track Club (SWTC) out of the Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute in Albuquerque.

Author Peter Nabakov has written a history of Indian Running.

Iroquois National LaCrosse Team was selected to attend the 2010  international  competition  in England; but travel paper snafus created delays.  Challenges with the stricter Homeland Security rules have upset the travel plans.

Gene Webster, Jr. (Navajo/Oneida/Ojibwa) too first place in the First Nations Golf Association’s 2010 Oneida Warrior Open Championship in Green Bay, WI.   Watch the tour and keep up with the news.   Learn about Notah Begay (Navajo), the only full blood Native American in the Professional Golfers Association.

Getting recognized in national sports is a definite challenge, but many Native athletes  have paved the way and more are continuously removing the barriers that have traditionally limited participation.
