CSIC Media Team
YOUTH MEDIA TEAM
The media team is one of four youth teams that currently meet from 11 am to 12:30 pm, just before the community dinners each month. All ages are eligible to participate at their skill level. Parents need to be in attendance and participate while their student(s) are here. The other youth group teams are: Art Team, Fitness Team, and, once a quarter, we will have activities for a Food Team teaching cooking, healthy eating and at least some business experiences through fund raising. At each Youth Team meeting, the students can chose which of the three teams they want to participate in that day, although sometime there will be opportunities to participate in two of the teams or a combination of two teams in the same day.
Media team members are learning how to report Native news in the Colorado Springs area. Skills will cover writing articles, filming news reports, taking pictures, reading news on camera and anchoring news reports as they are filmed. They will help contribute material to the youth pages of the local monthly CSIC Camp Crier newsletter, as well as other local media accepting citizen news stories such as FreshInk and other local print and electronic news places.
The youth will be given experiences in using a digital/movie camera and phone cameras, filming action shots, as well as using laptop computers, voice recording equipment, and taking notes as they collect news stories for submission to not only local media, but also national media that accepts material produced by youth about their Native communities and people
We will be focusing on creating visibility for the Native community in the area, but they will also be given the experience in and opportunity to submit their material to national online Native media that features youth news reporting, if they are interested. Along the way, they will be encouraged to submit their own creative writing, art, photography and other material to a wide variety of online places featuring just youth material. Each Media Team member will have a green folder to keep their contact and info papers in. These will need to be brought to each session for reference and to hold new material handed out
Family participation is encouraged and stressed. Elders in the community are always invited to join the youth in any of their activities and to be a part of all the learning action.
